Music Series: SONG OF FREEDOM AND STRUGGLE Online

Join us for this special 3-part series of archival audio/video, storytelling, history and music by CRAIG HARRISa master percussionist, educator, historian, storyteller, photographer, radio host and author of Crossing Borders: My Journey in Music and Bluegrass, Newgrass, Old-time and Americana MusicThe Band: Pioneers of Americana Music, Heartbeat, Warble and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music, and The New Folk Music. Harris’ reviews, articles, and photographs have appeared in countless newspapers, magazines, and websites. Having played percussion for C.J. Chenier, Greg Brown, Jonathan Edwards, Rod MacDonald, Melanie, Merl Saunders, Rick Danko, and Los Texmaniacs, he is a member of Two Days Jeans and the Gaea Star Band (with whom he’s co-hosted the syndicated Gaea Crystal Radio Hour since 2014). After teaching music in public/charter schools for more than a quarter of a century, Harris launched Drum Away the Blues in 2009. Since then, he’s also presented programs on Indigenous music, America’s musical roots, Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, and rock and roll.

Today's program, SONG OF FREEDOM AND STRUGGLE,  is special for "Black History Month" and examines music's role in reflecting and shaping American  society from “La Marseilles” to protest songs and Civil Rights anthems,
