Sunday Afternoon Talks: "Poli’s Palace and Majestic Theatres Memories Project In-Person
Created and Produced by Jay Misencik & Geralene Valentine Poli’s Palace and Majestic Theatres Memories Project brings to life the two magnificent dormant theatres in Bridgeport, CT. Complementing architectural photos of the theatres, people share memories of their time spent at the theatres . . . some worked, some entertained, some had a first date, some “grew up,” and some just went to “the show.” Jay and Geralene photographed former candy girls, usherettes, a Stratford resident who play boxed his father on the Palace stage in 1931, the last manager of the theatres, and women who had their first date at the theatres, with the “boy” they would eventually marry. They recorded the stories these people shared about what the Palace and Majestic meant to them and to Bridgeport’s downtown. In 2017, they published a book about the theatres. It is a cultural heritage project featuring the social history of a magical place, the Palace and Majestic Theatres. Memories hold the history, culture, and heritage of these long shuttered places . . . “Old Places Matter” The theatres are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. See the photographs . . . listen to the stories . . . and share your memories 2022 was the 100-year anniversary of the opening of the Palace and Majestic Theatres on Main Street in downtown Bridgeport
